Explosion-Proof Field Box Solution

Certified explosion-proof field box solution for petrochemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, and dust-hazard environments — providing compliant electrical and control interfaces in Zone 1/2 and Zone 21/22 hazardous areas.

ATEX IECEx Zone 1/2 IS Barrier Stainless Steel

Solution Overview

The Explosion-Proof Field Box Solution addresses the most critical aspect of electrical installations in hazardous areas: compliance. In petrochemical plants, oil & gas facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and dust-hazard environments, the electrical enclosure is not simply a protective box — it is a safety boundary that prevents ignition sources from reaching explosive atmospheres.

This solution provides ATEX/IECEx-certified explosion-proof junction boxes and control boxes that meet the specific requirements of Zone 1/2 (gas) and Zone 21/22 (dust) hazardous areas. The solution includes proper cable gland selection, intrinsically safe (IS) barrier modules, terminal block configuration, and grounding/bonding systems — all designed and installed in accordance with IEC 60079 standards.

In hazardous area projects, the enclosure selection and installation quality directly determine whether the project can be safely commissioned, pass regulatory inspection, and operate reliably over its design life. This solution ensures that every aspect of the field box installation meets the required safety standards.

Core Value Propositions

Regulatory Compliance
ATEX/IECEx certified enclosures with documented zone classification, equipment category, and temperature class — enabling project approval and regulatory inspection.
Ignition Prevention
Flameproof (Ex d), increased safety (Ex e), or intrinsically safe (Ex i) protection concepts prevent electrical sparks and hot surfaces from igniting explosive atmospheres.
Intrinsically Safe Circuits
IS barrier modules limit energy in field circuits to levels that cannot ignite explosive atmospheres, even under fault conditions.
Corrosion Resistance
Stainless steel (316L) or glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosures resist corrosion from process chemicals, salt spray, and harsh outdoor environments.
Certified Cable Entry
ATEX-certified cable glands maintain the enclosure's explosion protection concept at all cable entry points.
Audit-Ready Documentation
Complete certification documentation, zone classification records, and installation records support regulatory audits and insurance requirements.

System Workflow

1

Zone Classification Review

Before equipment selection, the hazardous area zone classification (Zone 0/1/2 for gas, Zone 20/21/22 for dust) is confirmed from the site hazardous area drawing. Equipment category and temperature class are selected accordingly.

2

Field Device Connection

Explosion-proof sensors, actuators, and push buttons in the hazardous area connect to the field box through ATEX-certified cable glands and Ex-rated terminal blocks.

3

IS Barrier Circuit Organization

Intrinsically safe field circuits are connected through Zener barriers or galvanic isolators that limit circuit energy to safe levels. IS and non-IS circuits are physically separated within the box.

4

Safe Area Interface

Signals from the IS barriers are routed to the safe area PLC or DCS through the designated safe area cable route. The IS barrier is installed in the safe area or in the field box depending on the system design.

5

Grounding & Bonding

The field box is connected to the plant equipotential bonding system. All cable shields are terminated at the grounding bar. Bonding resistance is verified to meet IEC 60079-14 requirements.

6

Inspection & Certification

A certified Ex inspector verifies the installation against the certified drawings, checks cable gland integrity, confirms zone boundary compliance, and issues the installation certificate.

Application Scenarios

▶ Petrochemical Process Area
Provide certified electrical interfaces for field instruments, control valves, and safety devices in refinery and chemical plant process areas classified Zone 1/2.
▶ Oil & Gas Station
Install explosion-proof junction boxes and control boxes at oil and gas gathering stations, compressor stations, and metering skids.
▶ Dust Hazard Production
Deploy in grain processing, wood working, pharmaceutical, and chemical powder manufacturing facilities classified Zone 21/22 for dust hazards.
▶ Hazardous Chemical Storage
Provide certified electrical access points for monitoring and control systems in chemical warehouses and tank farms.
▶ Explosion-Proof Pump Room
Install control and junction boxes for pump motor starters, level sensors, and flow meters in classified pump rooms.
▶ Special Industrial Hazardous Zones
Serve any industrial location where explosive gas or dust atmospheres may be present and electrical equipment must meet zone classification requirements.

Selection Guide

✓ Confirm the hazardous area zone classification from the certified area classification drawing before selecting any equipment.
✓ Never substitute standard enclosures for explosion-proof enclosures — the consequences of non-compliance are catastrophic.
✓ Material selection (stainless steel vs. GRP vs. aluminum) must consider process chemical exposure, installation location, and maintenance frequency.
✓ All cable entry devices must be ATEX/IECEx certified and compatible with the enclosure's protection concept.
✓ Intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe circuits must be physically separated — mixed wiring invalidates the IS protection concept.
✓ All equipment selection must be driven by 'compliant and certifiable' rather than 'functionally adequate' — regulatory acceptance is non-negotiable.

Deployment & Implementation Notes

⚠ Never drill, cut, or modify explosion-proof enclosures in the field — any modification invalidates the certification and creates safety hazards.
⚠ All accessories, cable glands, and nameplates must carry the required certification marks for the applicable zone classification.
⚠ Grounding and equipotential bonding must be complete and verified — this is both a safety requirement and a certification requirement.
⚠ Installation personnel must be trained in hazardous area electrical installation requirements — general electricians are not qualified without specific Ex training.
⚠ Commissioning must verify explosion-proof circuit boundaries, IS barrier configuration, and grounding system integrity.
⚠ Project documentation must include certification documents, hazardous area drawings, installation records, and inspection certificates for regulatory compliance.
